“The world changes whether we like it or not…but who you are is always something you have control over.”

In the magical kingdom of Orkena, the royal family readies for the Crossing, a death-defying race across the desert. The first to finish will take the throne and receive incredible magical abilities, but only after giving a human sacrifice. Zahru, a stablehand, can’t resist sneaking out of her small town to watch the festivities at the royal palace. But a small mistake causes her to become the human sacrifice. Will she survive the desert race?

This was everything I love in Young Adult fantasy! The pacing was perfect and the plot had enough twists to keep it interesting and moving forward. Zahru was such a likable main character, and I loved that Mae allowed us to see the motivation behind each characters’ decision, whether or not we liked them.

The magic in THE KINDER POISON felt very original, and I loved the descriptive scenes. The romance felt a little cheesy to me, but I think that’s more due to the age group than the writer’s ability. I’m excited to see where the series goes, and I’d encourage you to pick this up if you enjoy Young Adult fantasy!
