I had high expectations for this book after the synopsis said that this was good for fans of Victoria Aveyard (I absolutely adored the Red Queen series - it was just so amazing!), but it did not really hold up to these expectations.

To begin with, the story follows Zahru - a girl who has always dreamed of leaving the kingdom of Orkena and going on adventures. But she is no one special - her only special ability is the ability to talk to animals - and that makes her unable to do anything other than work the royal stables. However, a grand event starts happening in the royal family - the king says that whichever one of his heirs is able to win the trek across the desert, they will be crowned king. Unfortunately, Zahru ends up in the middle of the mess, and her story begins from there.

A lot of the world-building was sort of missed here, with the book centering more on relationships than fantasy. Overall, it was an okay read.
