The cover of this book is eye catching. The scorpion hints at something desert-esk. And the premise is full of promise.
From the first pages, we are immediately thrown into the plotting of two girls who are trying to get their names on a list to sneak into the royal palace for an upcoming party. This alone isn’t a gripping hook, but it is the layers of internal conflict playing out that hook a reader. It’s obvious that the MC and her friend Hen are dreaming of a life that is beyond what their station and status allow. They want what they cannot have, and since they may never have it, they want to experience what it feels like to have an elevated status, even if it’s just for one night. This desire, the clear illustration into the MC’s personal struggle, is what hooks a reader. You can tell from the first few pages of the book that it’s going to be a gripping story, especially because of the ever present foreshadowing of the human sacrifice. I can’t wait to read this book in its entirety.
