One of the key developmental tasks of adolescence is establishing independence from one's parents. In Wild Game , the author shares her story of becoming an accessory to her mother's affair. Imagine being 14 years old, on the cusp of womanhood, beginning to explore your own relationships with the opposite sex, and also having intimate details of your mother's affair with another man. The implications of this disturbing relationship lasted for years into the author's adulthood.

The author bares her soul in this well-written memoir and it was at times difficult to read as the details unfolded. Her mother possessed a big personality, forcing everyone around her to live in her shadows. I can completely understand how the author was sucked into this unhealthy relationship. As she matured, she struggled to get her own life together. Alternately disturbing and enthralling, I could not put this book down.
