Enjoyable Memoir
When I first saw this book as an option for BOTM the first thing I noticed, before even reading the description, was that it is a memoir. Which made me go “meh”. However when I read the synopsis about a daughter whose mother confides in her about her affair, at the age of 14, I was intrigued. Ultimately I ended up getting it as an add on and I’m happy I did.
This book read like a novel, not a memoir. Perhaps that is because a lot of the parts of Rennie’s life feel unreal to me. The secrets her mother asked, and expected, her to keep. The wealth of money their stepfather had. The extravagant meals they often ate. Or, perhaps, it was the writing style. Either way, it was much easier for me to read than nonfiction typically is. I also found that I kept reading because I needed to know what would happen in these relationships, who and if anyone would find out about them, and what kind of growth our main character would have. On top of having Rennie lie for her mother, there are so many more complexities to the web these two are weaving, which makes it even more interesting, and makes you wonder how Rennie will handle her own relationships. That is really the crux of the story, in my opinion.
If you're looking for a quick, interesting read that is a little different than your typical memoir I would give this one a shot!
