San Francisco's Poet Laureate, Ickey Jerusalem, is discovered dead in an airport lavatory, bound with a plastic bag over his head. When Inspector O'Nadir and Ded Smith investigate, the evidence points to suicide, but the circumstances surrounding his discovery raise questions.
Ded Smith has a nomadic existence, investigating the deaths of others. This premise could be rather morose, yet he has found a way to make it his way of life. He finds sanctuary when he meets people who value his abilities. Inspector O'Nadir admires Ded's meticulous investigation of each case's facts. In exchange, Ded appreciates O'Nadir for his consideration.
Ded Smith's powerlessness and struggle make him appear as an inexperienced character at first glance, yet this is simply a mask for what lays beneath. He is a far more sophisticated figure, with ideas and reasoning that are initially outside the scope of the reader's comprehension. Each intricate trait is exposed before the reader's eyes, revealing yet another facet to this individual.
The engaging characters presented here coupled with the narrative make this story’s idea riveting. A compelling idea and well-developed characters are critical components of any successful narrative. When readers engage with a tale, they want to be immersed in a world that feels unique, filled with characters that live and breathe beyond the pages of the book. An author who excels at this can create a visceral and unforgettable reading experience.
