This story takes place in New York City and primarily involves the meeting of two owners and their dogs. One woman, Martha, loses one of her bull terriers and is searching for an older bull terrier to take that dogs place and be company for her remaining dog, Minnie; Carol, who is dying of cancer, wants to find a new home for her eleven year old bull terrier dog, and knows he will be expensive to maintain. The two women and their dogs are informally introduced through a mutual acquaintance, and a date has been set to see if Carol's dog is a match for Martha's!
