This sample was a really fun, and unexpected treat to read. I was immediately taken in by the writing style - descriptive, but not verbose. The setting is in an area of the United States that is near and dear to me. The main character(s) are well depicted with an inner maturity that belies their age and stage in life. Each chapter begins with a musing/recollection by one of the main character’s that offers insight into the development of a primary relationship in the novel. So far the pacing is to my liking and it does not seem like I am slogging through the book. The dialogue is short, frequent and fast to move through. It is possible the tone of the book could turn heavy with such a serious topic, but I am willing to try it and continue reading. I wonder how much environment plays into/effects overall tone? This is something that will be fun to discover.
