What I liked about this book straight away, is that you can feel the main character, Jacks, pain and worry. You instantly feel connected to Jack and his loss of both parents, even with one still alive. I was curious to find out what the backstory is with Jacks and Mattys father. This book touches on addiction briefly in the first couple of chapters and I wonder if this is a continuing story line throughout the book. It dove right into the family’s troubles and what a teenager living in poverty would face. Jack clearly cares a great deal for his brother and is willing to sacrifice the little money they have for him to have something he wants. One of Jacks classmates, Ava, has a secret and I’m intrigued to know what it is. This was a quick and easy read of the first few chapters. I wanted it to continue on to see where it goes. A great start to this book for me!
