This is very dark and raw and depressing, and I'd definitely recommend if that's your thing!

Synopsis: Jack and Matty's brother is in prison and mother has died and they have an eviction notice and $15 to their name. Jack knows that his father hid a briefcase with money before he goes to prison and is desperate to find it. The problem is that Vincent Bardem believes the money belongs to him, and is hoping Jack will lead him to it. Bardem's daughter also Ava has to decide which side she's on.

It's dark for young adult, and it's very clear that all the characters in this book had to grow up very quickly. The writing is very straightforward and simple, and easy to take away the understanding that everything they do is about life and death.

I actually really liked how Jack did basically everything wrong. That's probably exactly what would happen if a 17-year-old was all of a sudden essentially at war with drug runners. I liked how he wasn't magically a sharpshooter or survivalist, he was still struggling to get by.

This is a pretty quick read, and the relationships are powerful (even Jack's relationship with his father, which starts off rough!), read it with a warm blanket as you'll feel like you're out in the snowstorm with them!

Thanks to #bookishfirst and #macmillenpublishers for an early copy of this!
