An Overall Good Read

I give this book a 3.5 star rating, but I rounded it up for the purposes of the review. I LOVE the cover of this book, the blues are vivid, they catch the reader's eye, they draw you in...that being said the cover was the thing I loved the most.

This is the debut novel by author Cory Anderson, and it is a good one, but there were a few things that I felt needed some work. The first and most important was that there were times I didn't know whose perspective I was reading from - the chapters were not marked, the words were not easy to distinguish and it took me a paragraph or two to figure this out. I want the story to flow, this really disrupted that for me. The second thing was that the characters needed more - I loved Matty, but didn't really feel anything for Ava or Jack and I felt like I should have had a better connection.

Then there is the ending...sigh...the make or break of the book and this took the book down for me. The author is so descriptive in what happens to Ava and then this....a major let down in my eyes, not even a real cliffhanger, just a real WTF?!? I despise endings that are "open to interpretation" or endings that "contradict things we have come to know as truth in the story". I could get past the other things, but the ending really didn't work for me.

Overall I will read more by this author in the future, but she isn't a move to the top of my list, pre-purchase any of them or mark my calendar for her releases. Not a bad read, but not one of my favorites either.
