I was intrigued by the first paragraph - and then as Jack was introduced my heart ached for him & his situation. I became invested in the story from the start. The way the author has introduced us to the tension of the story makes you sit up and lean into cheering for Jack from the beginning. Although this may be a story with extreme or heightened events, it is at the same time familiar for kids who have to assume a "parent role" in their home, caring for younger siblings, the fear of being seperated. I am not sure how Jack, Matty & Ava all come together and how their stories will be played out, but I am left definitely wanting to find out!
