What Beauty There Is begins with a mother's suicide described on the page. Jack, her son, finds her and needs to bury her while hiding her death - and their extreme poverty - from his little brother. While at school the next day, Jack meets Ava. The reader then learns that the flashbacks in italics at the beginning of each chapter are from Ava, who is somehow connected to Jack.

I'm not too sure what to think of the plot or where it might be going after this excerpt - this book mostly just seems sad. The cover matches that vibe.
