I never had tried reading a true crime, but after this book, I certainly would consider it. We Thought We Knew You is a true crime novel that follows the case of the murder of Mary Yoder. It was a great read that was engaging and kept you wanting to know more about the case. It was formatted to jump between past and present, spinning an accurate portrayal of the day of the murder and all the subsequent events that lead up to it. It gives a brief backstory on each person that is involved in the case and made sure the story was still engaging at every turn. The plot was smooth and did a good job of laying out all the evidence and eyewitness testimonies of the case. The only negative things I would mention are the trigger warnings...

TW - Had strong language as an effect of accurately relaying texts between people involved in the case. It also had a brief, factual description of an alleged rape, but is only mentioned in detail in an easily skippable paragraph. Although the alleged rape comes into play throughout the story, the details are only mentioned once or twice.

Otherwise it was a fantastic story that I would highly recommend!
