In the aftermath of her sister’s rape and subsequent trial, Em finds her voice quite literally as an author. With the help of her newfound friend, Jess, Em grieves her sister’s loses, her own loses, and reimagines the female experience following trauma via writing a story of 15th century French woman, Marguerite, who sought to avenge the sexual violence experienced by her female community members. Such a unique and creative plot; unlike anything I’ve ever read before.

The story structure follows present day with Em’s story of Marguerite interlaced throughout. This story has beautiful prose and at its core strives to reimagine the way we view females within the society, as well as shifting the power structure between genders, that including non-binary identifying individuals.

Trigger warning: rape, sexual violence, war.
