I was super excited for We Are the Ashes, We Are the Fire, because it sounded incredible: gritty, feminist, honest, and empowering. But it totally falls short on the counts of “feminist” and “empowering”, within the first ten pages.
On page six the main character/narrator complains about her male classmates, saying “they were being such boys!” Her father responds by saying “‘ Was their behavior directly related to their anatomy?’” This is incredibly cissexist. Gender is NOT equal to sex. Their anatomy is not relevant to the fact that they’re boys.
Honestly after that line I just skimmed and didn’t take note of much. I am sick and tired of “feminist” books being transphobic.
