Torn

The opening of the book left me sad, but I’m sure it’s in a way that the author intended. I hope that this book ends with the independent bookstore doing better and finding success because I think the world needs more stories about wonderful, thriving independent bookstores rather than failing, destitute ones. Maybe that’s naive of me. I know that the reality is probably much closer to this book’s portrayal than I would hope.

I want there to be more to Aaron than just taking care of his dad and being sad about the bookstore. Who are his friends? What does he do outside of reading? I’m not even sure how old he is. I wish there were more depth to him.

The writing style is very plain but also references other books in a way that feels esoteric. I feel bad when I don’t understand the references, like maybe I have failed by not reading the book.

I don’t have a fully fleshed-out opinion yet because I’m torn on wanting to see what will happen and wanting to read a different, happier story.
