Oh, this book is a Good Book, with a capitol G. The whole story keeps you guessing what is about to be uncovered next.

It makes you think in a really interesting way. Like if your thoughts while reading a mystery novel had a baby with your scrambled thoughts as your falling asleep. But with such a beautiful, vibrant, and almost homey feeling. I could see this easily becoming a huge TV show/movie. Similar existential depth as Thirteen Reasons Why.

The pace is almost dizzying, lost in the story. So many story references that mirror the plot and assist in metaphor. I have never felt so honestly in love with how a story is written as I was with this book. Thank you Gayle Forman! It is a very circular book with so many amazing callbacks to other stories. Almost as if the book has inside jokes with itself.

The writing brings these stories to you, tells you the meaning, and then presents the even deeper meaning into the story.

But oh my goodness! The parallels. I just couldn’t get over the writing the entire time but especially when there were the overlaps with dialogue from past and present. Gorgeous!

It is like an ode to every nook in the library that is my heart. The way Aaron sees the world and how it is affected because of the books he’s read. You can tell his character is very full and formed.

Aaron isn’t a very likable character for a lot of the book, but it is so raw. He doesn’t know what he’s doing, he makes terrible choices that affect other people in substantial ways, he is an unreliable narrator, and he doesn’t fully comprehend his emotions and grief. Also, beautiful character development for everyone.
