This novel surprised in the best ways, starting with the chapter titles being actual book titles, some of which I've actually read. This author's writing made me feel so many emotions, including joy, sadness, anger, frustration, anxiety, and rejection. She writes with underlying humor to highlight the fragility of the human spirit as well as its undying spirit of determination to survive. She uses symbolism to add depth to her novel.

I enjoyed the setting so much--an independent bookstore set in the northwestern US, as well as the book and music discussions between the characters.

The themes of friendship, especially unexpected relationships between former enemies, was so well done and the characters felt so real to me with their flaws and dreams. I loved the father-son relationship and the growth that both characters had as the book progressed.

Other themes that made this a five star read for me were the hints of romance, anxiety, depression, death of a loved one, addiction, and sense of community--the author did not shy away from the tough topics and how these issues impact everyone.
