The cover is what drew me to the book as there are so many details that grab the eye: the girl behind the boy on the bench (seemingly without him noticing), the subtle meteorites, the dinosaur on his shirt, the pile of books. All these details made me really curious about the story. I was surprised that the girl doesn't actually appear in the sample. Instead, we see a father and son in a failing bookstore and learn about a family torn about by addiction and the resulting bankruptcy. It's sad but also beautiful, and I already feel for these characters after such a short preview, which is why I want to read more. The two main characters are quite striking, and I want to know more about them as well as get to know the other characters.
