I use to live in Dayton, Ohio and in our historic Oregon District there is a bookshop that immediately popped in my head when I read 'moldering bookstore'. Those are the best ones! It immediately dropped me into the story's bookstore! 'Crusty mountain town' also grabbed my attention. The imagery of a decrepit mountain town coupled with a kid trying to escape the latter and his problems with an easy fix-all was just too good to pass up! Not to mention Gayle Forman has written some amazing books in the past so I'm sure this one will not disappoint. The cover of this book is also different from her others, which stuck out at me immediately.
