If you know me, you know that I do not DNF books. It’s just not something I can do. But this book gave me a run for my money and not in a good way. I wanted to put this down after the first few chapters and never pick it up again.

Let’s start with some things I liked. The premise is cool. A dying magic city split into the new and the old with witches and monsters in an urban fantasy land. Kings and Maidans bring magic to the land, but they died off long ago…or did they? This is cool! I loved that there was lots of LGBTQIA* rep in the urbane fantasy realm.

Now, to the info I was less than impressed by. Unfortunately the writing was placid and confusing. The multiple POVS were disjointed and the plot felt clunky and hardly held together. On top of just poor plot and writing, there’s also just straight up racist and harmful plot moves. Others all over have explained this much better than I could, but it’s uncomfortable and harmful.
