Confusing

The opening chapters were really strong and portrayed a world steeped in magic and wonder, but there is no real introduction to that world (it feels like the reader is plopped into the story with no real grasp of where we are), which makes the First Look super confusing. I hope things are explained a bit more thoroughly as the story begins.
I do like the queer cast, unapologetic and seemingly well rounded. The four characters live on an island called River City; it's basically a sovereign nation — US laws do not apply. And yes, the book takes place in current day. I'm interested to continue on their journey to attempt to restore magic to River City after its decline twenty years ago - fingers crossed some of the confusion is cleared up!
