The title of this book drew me in with the promise of an exciting story to come. The cover also went along that possibility. I was even more excited when I saw that the chapters alternated between the characters. I did not read the first two books in this series.

In the beginning, there were a lot of people tossed in. One of the characters, Maxine, buys a condo, and then breaks up with her boyfriend the minute he finishes helping her move her belongings up 87 steps to her new home. Twenty years later, she’s having an affair with her friend’s husband. Gavin Dean, the college CFO makes unwanted moves on a college student named Barret, when the young man only wants to move to a single room because he doesn’t like his roommates. One couple, Hester and Morgan apparently had an agreement that they would never discuss each others past, after I don’t know how many years together. Morgan decides to change that, so he drops a small hint while driving about the school he went to years ago in that area, and then keeps trying to change the rules they had made by prodding Hester to find out more and share.

While giving me background information, I can’t say I liked the book by the 25% mark, and even considered making it a do not finish. But it does improve after that point. So if you are feeling rather let down by the first 25% of the book, hang in. It becomes more suspenseful as the book progresses.

Sex, adultery, transgender character.
