This book surprised me by how much I enjoyed it. I read it in one sitting and could not wait to find out what happened. I was immediately intrigued. There is a great mix of plot development with character development and I never felt that the drama was forced. As the plot unraveled so did the drama. I also felt that the relationships were complex without being forced. The characters were likeable in the sense that they all played their part well. So even the characters I didn't like because of their actions, didn't annoy me with their behavior or dialogue.
This book is part of a series but I read it as a standalone and didn't feel that I was missing out. With that being said, the two detectives, Hester and Angela, were absolutely delightful and not only do I want to read more about them, I want to be their friend. This is a great choice for anyone looking for their next mystery read and I think there is a lot to unpack here and would provide a great discussion in book club.
