This was the first “Hester Thursby” mystery by the author that I’ve read. I found it to be a good, intriguing read, without too much carry over from the other mysteries. I enjoyed it as a ‘stand-alone’ and especially liked the short chapter format. That allowed me to pick up the book and read it briefly without devoting a lengthier time reading at one time. The mystery itself spanned a 24 year period, and definitely left me guessing as to the outcome until the very end!

The interplay of the detective as a friend rather than just a detective, left some challenge to their friendship. They were good collaborators as friends and colleagues, with Hester lending her expertise as a librarian to the case. She showed that even someone without law enforcement experience can be an integral part of an investigative team.

Overall, I would recommend this story, even to those who have not read the first installments.
