The excerpt was great at introducing us to characters that seem likable right away, and I am curious to learn more about them. The two timelines - one in 1997 and one in 2021 - is a classic device, and while some of the setup seems rather routine for thrillers, I found the main characters - Maxine and Hester - interesting and would like to know how their stories meet.
