Vagabonds is quite a lengthy read at 600 pages, but Hao Jingfang's world building was exceptional, in my opinion. I really felt the weight and depth of the history within the story, given its integral role in the plot.

I was initially intrigued by this book because of the author, who was the first Chinese female to win the Hugo Award. I have not read many novels by native Chinese authors, and I found this to be a great opportunity to better understand the science fiction world from an Eastern point of view. As an Asian American, I found the initial premise quite relevant, as I also find myself struggling with a dichotomous cultural identity. This concept of identity was explored even further philosophically and politically in the author's portrayal of Mars vs. Earth.

Overall, a superbly interesting sci-fi read with an added philosophical debate bonus.
