Thank you bookishfirst for sending me an advanced review copy. I saw this book as a sort of metaphor for communism vs capitalism. Martian children return home after 5 years of living on earth. There was a war a long time ago where people on Mars completely split away from those on earth. While earth has continued with capitalism and individualism. Mars prides itself on a system of order where a central authority controls almost every aspect of their lives down to where they live, where they work. In order to access really anything in Martian society you need to have identification and work at an atelier .There are no options to not work or follow an individualized path.

The starting premise is very interesting but there are too many characters and the story is just too long. I kept losing track of the plot and found this extremely tiresome to read at times. But still the overall plot is good there's just too much other stuff.
