Excellent world building
Vagabonds primarily follows Luoying, who has her feet in both worlds (literally). Born on Mar, but raised on Earth, Luoying is selected to be a member of a group of teens returning to her home planet and struggles to define who she is.
Jingfangs’s novel was a satisfying exercise in world building. Though not a page turner, the rich atmosphere that is created is impressive. I found the difference between the Martian and Terran cultures, weighing the virtues of communist and free market societies, particularly relevant in today’s political climate.
Though I was not put off by the length (approximately 600 pages), Vagabonds would be best for a reader that enjoys deep dives into net new science fiction settings and culture.
