This is a really difficult novel to review! The world that Hao Jingfang created is incredible - after 100+ years of humans living on Mars, they have grown into a very different societal model than that of Earth. Political intrigue takes a back seat, however, or rather, we see it play out, along the lives of Martian teenagers who have spent the last five years as students on Earth. They are the titular vagabonds, who feel like they belong to neither place. We follow one girl, Yuoling, as she debates within herself (and with others) her place in the world and the meaning of life.

If you like philosophical debates, political and economic theory (written in a very accessible way), and imagining what it would be like if humans lived on Mars... then this is the book for you!
