I don't give 1-star ratings for books unless there is nothing redeemable about it and/or it's vulgar and gratuitously violent/offensive. So if I just didn't like the book at all; the plot, the characters, etc, then I will give 2 stars. Unfortunately, Vagabonds gets 2 stars. I was bored to tears reading this and I switched to the audiobook (borrowed from Hoopla) after I got the gist of the world-building but even then it was still pretty unbearable. It seems to just be a character study. There's no real plot. And for a book with no real plot to be over 600 pages?! What torture. It started out a little bit interesting, with this war between Earth and Mars and Mars then sends a group of children to Earth to appease them and end the war. Time passes and the Martians go back to Mars. They're in limbo though and don't really fit in with Martians anymore. Their formative years were spent on a whole different planet. Sounds interesting! But then there are machinations happening and too many characters and too much daily minutiae to keep my attention. I skimmed the whole second half once I had to return the audiobook and didn't want to waste a Hoopla borrow to get it again.
