I really wanted to enjoy this book. I am a history buff and especially like Asian American history. This book is a personal story of survival and facing the inhimanity of humanity. That being said, I really struggled with this book. It would really drag in parts, then there would be something that piqued my interest. I am not downplaying the sadness and the struggle that this family endured, but I just couldn't relate to the characters. The story is one that needs to be told, as most people don't even realize that the genocide took place.
I will attempt another run at this story at a later date since I feel it is important to understand the human struggle. I have great admiration for Mae and the struggles that his family faced, but there was just something about the way this story unfolded that didn't keep me engaged. Most readers have rated this book very highly.
