I really enjoyed Trace of Evil, a murder mystery set in a small Upstate New York town. I instantly fell in love with Burning Lake as I was born in Upstate New York and it brought back happy memories. The central character Natalie is a smart, dedicated detective who is still dealing with the murder of her sister when she was a child when she has to investigate the murder of a childhood friend (and wife of a fellow cop). The tidbits of her (and the town's) past that are slowly revealed just add to the suspense.
The descriptions in this book are vivid. I found myself creating the scenes in my mind. The supporting characters are fairly well-rounded (some more than others ) but I got a good sense of everyone and how they would relate to each other. There are a few mysteries that are all solved by the end and all of them were not what I had expected. I would recommend this book for people who like murder mysteries with a small town feel.
