Natalie Lockhart is a rookie detective in Burning Lake, New York, which is unremarkable except that it was once the place where 3 young women were burned as witches. To this day, black magic persists in the town. When a young pregnant high school teacher is found murdered, Natalie must try to unravel the senseless killing while still trying to solve 9 murders committed by a serial killer. This makes our rookie detective anxious because her oldest sister was a past murder victim in the town. The story is suspenseful and there is a plethora of characters who could have killed the sweet teacher. The ending was a bit of a surprise for me and I did not see the author’s creative wrap-up coming. Excellent, scary, demonic stuff in this book and I liked it VERY much. It could use a tad of editing and it might have been rewarded with more stars. But well worth the read.
