So Disappointing

I received this book from BookishFirst and I was so excited to start it. But while this book had an amazing premise, the execution left a lot to be desired. It truly felt like the author had mapped out everything but was so excited to get to certain points that parts were just muddled through. The whole story was disjointed and time jumps were made with no warning or explanation. Keelin was really the only character that had any characterization, and even that was truly disappointing. I had hoped for a strong, independent character- however she was mostly lip service as there was less showing and more telling throughout the book. Additionally, her motives and romance seem disjointed and never really grow to reach the places they do. She makes sudden changes and concessions with little reasoning. The rest of the characters weren’t as lucky: they were hollow and it was hard to find a reason to like or root for them. The ending really topped off my disappointment. I had hoped for so much in this book, and even the basic wants I had weren’t met. I’m sad to say this- I looked forward to a Celtic story that was fresh and different.

If you want a good story set in a Celtic setting with fairytales and magic, I suggest reading the Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier.
