It’s been a long, long while since I’ve picked up a Koontz book, probably not since I consumed many of them in my teens. My initial impression was that the descriptive segments are a bit heavy (particularly in the Cora chapters), which gave me the feeling that I was wading through it to get to the plot. I quickly adjusted and was able to look past that, and I have to give it to Koontz for sucking me into the plot within just a handful of pages, however. I found the character of Jane to be immediately likable and as her story unfolded, with the suspected murder of her husband I found myself invested in learning more. The overall plot is a nanotechnology conspiracy that turns people into suicidal assassins — how could you not be intrigued? I’m definitely tempted to read more and might just be interested in becoming a repeat Koontz reader again.
