I know this is Koontz second book with rogue FBI agent Jane Hawk, and I'm sure if I'd read the first book I would give a fig about Jane in this first impression. But I didn't read that book, so I don't give a fig about Jane. The sections that detail her FBI abilities, paranoia, intelligence, and vague blonde attractiveness, paired with her intimidation/seduction thing with this other character Lawrence, are so boring. BUT those passages with Cora? Where she's getting subtly brainwashed by a mysterious stranger and is spending her last hours ghost writing her intentions, not actually realizing what's going on, as the reader knows very well she's going to totally kill herself any minute now?? RIVETING! I want to read the rest of this novel just for this plot.
