In reading the synopsis for this title, I wasn't sure what to expect. I've got to be one of the last people on Earth who hasn't read The Handmaid's Tale or Educated, so I don't really have anything to compare it to. The writing is concise and the imagery gave me a clear picture of what the community of New Jerusalem looks like. The storytelling sucked me in, even when I was reluctant to engage with a story involving religion. I think when I originally read the description, I had a more vanilla story in mind, but after reading the First Look, I feel like this is a story of resistance and change. These characters are relatable and the images on the cover lend a sinister air to the idea of even cracking the cover. I can certainly see the beginnings of so many cult leaders we've read about in the character of Daniel, and as a reader, I really want to delve deeper into his motivations and why so many people in this community are obviously too terrified to speak, even when they are so obviously uncomfortable with what is going on. I'm not sure how a story like this is going to play in the current market, but it's unlike anything that I've seen before, and that in and of itself is exciting.
