The Virtue of Sin is a story of a religious community called New Jerusalem, which is within gated fences, under lock and key. The community is run by Daniel the “prophet.” Women do not get to speak around men, and are married based on what the boys are told their dreams mean re: whom they should pick for a wife. The story begins on the wedding day of a number of children ages 14-16. One of the young ladies knows who will pick her as he has been leaving her messages in the sand. However, things do not go as planned and Caleb, the boy who was going to pick her, is now in quite a bind.
This story was fascinating from the start. The characters pop out from the page, and the rules of this community depict the kind of life these people live. It is well written and I cannot wait to read the rest. I recommend you read it to. You will not be disappointed!
