Paul Adams has returned to the little town of Gritten for the first time in 25 years to visit his dying mother. He's not happy to be back, because returning brings back the memories of what happened all those years ago. When one of his friends was killed by another friend, Charlie Crabtree. Paul has spent years trying to forget the past, but the past has a way of returning.

A boy has turned up dead, and the murder is exceedingly similar to that of the one committed by Charlie. Detective Amanda Beck is on the case that will ultimately lead her to Paul. But there is a greater mystery at hand than why the boy was killed. Because all those years, Charlie Crabtree walked into the woods...and was never seen again.

The Shadows is a book I was extremely excited to read. The Whisper Man was one of my favorite books of 2019 and I couldn't wait to see what Alex North had come up with next. The result was an incredible thriller filled with twists and turns that I couldn't put down. I read the whole thing in about 14 hours.

The story was excellent, it kept me at the edge of my seat. The pacing was perfect. The twists were exceptionally executed. I honestly didn't see the biggest one coming at all. The characters had lots of depth, and it as great that not only was it written in two different perspectives, but also two different times.

Alex North has a way of creating a creepy story that makes you question just enough if it's possible, and then turn it all around so you realize it was never really as it seemed. The Shadows shows the depravity of people, and how easy situations can spiral out of control. It's a story I would gladly read again.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an entertaining mystery/thriller that will not disappoint. And once again I look forward to seeing what Alex North comes up with next.
