I fell in love with Alex North’s writing and storytelling last year after reading The Whisper Man. While not a five star read, it still encompassed the spookiness and darkness that I love in a good thriller. So it’s no surprise that The Shadows was one of my most anticipated reads of the year.

The Shadows followed a storyline that I love - almost like an urban legend, Slenderman like tale. Anyone that knows me well, knows that I love the tale of Slenderman and this gave me very similar vibes to the original story and subsequent murders that happened in 2014 inspired by the tale. The lucid dream aspect was also so well done, it gave me the creeps. I devoured this book when I had the chance to pick it up. The overall vibes of The Shadows themselves, the surrounding woods in the town of Gritten, was truly a dream setting for me. Super atmospheric and spooky. You could almost feel like you were in the woods at times with the boys.

My only “complaint” which isn’t even really a criticism was the ending. I was slightly disappointed, hoping for something more dark and sinister. There were a few better alternative endings North could’ve used, in my opinion, that would’ve made it a five star read for me. Regardless, I loved the story and I’ll definitely be on the edge of my seat waiting for Alex North’s next release!

I highly recommend this one if you enjoyed The Whisper Man. It’s a great story for Halloween spooky season too! If you read and enjoyed this one, it reminded me a little bit of Before She Was Found by Heather Gudenkauf, so I recommend that one too if you like the urban legend storyline.
