Sadly it didn't meet my expectations

I had really high expectations for this book because I loved the Whisper Man which is written by the same author. I was expecting the same level of mystery, suspense, thriller, and horror. Unfortunately, all of my expectations were unmet. I started and stopped this book 2-3 times because I kept getting lost. The alternating chapters between flashbacks, present time, Paul, and the police detective made it confusing and hard to keep track of every side. And not all of the chapters provided action, clues, or cliff hangers to keep me interested. The author also spent a really long time providing closure to the characters. I can appreciate the intent by the author to provide a perfect ending for every character, but I wasn't really interested in their problems anyways so the closure seemed dragged out. There were some plot twists that I wasn't expecting but overall this book paled in comparison to the Whisper Man.
