This thriller is the second book by the author. Lots of times, the second book isn't as good, sort of a sophomore slump kind of thing. I am glad to say, this book was as intricate and satisfying as the first. It does have one character from the first book, Detective Amanda Beck. Since both stories involve a crime and are in the same general area, her appearance isn't that surprising.
This is the story of Paul Adams. At least he is our focus and entree to the events. In his childhood, he was part of a group of boys, two of whom committed a murder after which one disappeared. Paul's home bordered a woody patch from which the suburb he grew up in got its name. informally, everyone called the wood The Shadows. It cast a dark shadow on all who lived near it, or so Paul would claim. He left home as soon as he could, and only returned because his mother was dying.
The book is divided into chapters where Paul is either remembering the past or acting in the present and chapters where other characters are doing things. It's fairly easy to tell which are which, because Paul's chapters are in first person. I think this technique works well in moving the story along without forcing Paul to be places it makes no sense for him to be.
I totally enjoyed reading this book. It was a fast read. I even liked the nonsense on lucid dreaming.
I won the copy of the book that I read for this review from Goodreads.
