The Shadows

Some thrillers are great while you read them and some stick with you long after you finish them. The Shadows is one of those thrillers that will stick with you long after you finish it and will not let you go.

Years after a gruesome murder tore Paul’s life apart, Paul has managed to move forward, but he has never forgotten what happened. It was, after all, his friend, Charlie Crabtree, who committed the murder, and it was his friend who died. Paul has returned to his hometown to care for his mother when a copycat murder is committed in a neighboring town, forcing Paul to relive the events that have haunted him for twenty-five years.

I was expecting twists and turns with the copycat case. I was expecting some tough emotions as Paul worked through remembering what happened when one of his friends murdered another friend. The twenty-five-year-old murder is a solved case, so I was not expecting a twist with that murder that made me put down my book and process through tears. It is that twist that will forever live rent free in my brain and cemented Alex North as one of the best thriller writers I have ever read.

This book was everything I never knew I needed in a thriller. It beautifully wove together timelines and kept me engaged from the very first page. It was emotional and made me connect with the characters. While it is my favorite Alex North book, I will always read anything North writes because of this book.
