I absolutely loved Alex North’s previous release, The Whisper Man, in fact it was one of my favorite books I read last year, so I was excited to receive an
ARC of The Shadows. Unfortunately, though, I was left feeling underwhelmed.
The story started out too slow for me and didn’t hook me in or keep my interest like The Whisper Man did. And maybe that was my issue with this one, I was comparing it too much to his previous book and I went into it with high expectations. I really struggled to get into the story and I ended up starting and stopping a few times.
One thing I did enjoy was the creepy, sinister mood of the book. It definitely had some good spooky vibes. There are also some great characters in The Shadows, particularly the detectives.
I think many thriller and horror lovers will still enjoy this book, but for me it was a classic case of, “It’s not you, it’s me”.
