The Whisper Man was one of my favorite thrillers last year and this felt like a very similar formula. I liked the dual POV and timelines where we get glimpses of a law enforcement officer pulling apart the mystery in the present and someone on the sidelines of the crime telling his story in both the past and present.⁣

The lucid dreaming aspect was creepy (and something I may or may not want to try doing) and the gruesome nature of the crime and who the perpetrators were was extremely disturbing. The characters were all likable as well and the writing felt smooth, atmospheric, and easily bingeable. ⁣

There was a twist that I didn’t pick up on until very shortly before it was revealed and it added another interesting layer to the story that I wasn’t expecting. The ending definitely surprised me too!⁣

I was missing some of the tension and the stakes I had felt in The Whisper Man. While it certainly was creepy, it never really drove it all the way home for me. I’m struggling to pinpoint if it was the plot or the execution but I think it just came up short *in comparison to its predecessor*.⁣

That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy the book and basically finish it in one sitting, but it’s hard not to compare it to The Whisper Man. I kept waiting for one more twist or surprise to pop up and it never did.
