The book has three different perspectives - Paul Adams in the present, going back to his hometown to see his sick, dying mother; Paul Adams in the past, when him and his best friend joined Charlie Crabtree and another boy in a game of lucid dreaming that turns very sick, with Charlie committing a shocking murder; and Amanda Beck in the present , who is investigating cases that copy-cat what Charlie did 25 years ago.

Going in, I was sure this was a supernatural horror-like story. But it turned out to be a little different and in a good unexpected way. I listened to the audiobook and I was hooked from the beginning. It reminded me of Stephen King's The Outsider in a way, the style of writing is similar and the book even tributes via its characters a few of King's best works. I remember being fascinated and horrified at the same time when I discovered what lucid dreaming was during my highschool years and was thrilled to have it be such an important element of this story.
