Alex North has written a masterful suspense novel. This tale begins with four adolescent boys who are on the social outskirts at their school. Charlie draws the others into an experiment with lucid dreaming. Paul, the narrator, breaks away from the quartet but his friend James remains under Charlie’s spell. Times passes, James is brutally murdered by Charlie and Billy but Charlie is never seen again. Flash forward and Paul must return to the town as his mother is dying.
This is the foundation for an excellent story of surviving a horrible murder. Alex North was a reporter before becoming a novelist which shows in the structure of the book. Each character is distinct and the plot is tight. The forest at the edge of town is an important character to this story as well.
If you like Tana French or Agatha Christie, this might be an interesting read. I could not put it down. I was lucky to receive this ARC from Celadon Books. Based on other reviews, I cannot wait to read Mr. North’s first book, The Whisper Man.
