The fact that The Shadows is currently the #1 most popular July 2020 book on Goodreads is no surprise to me. It's good - chilling, suspenseful, and atmospheric and I listened to the audio version. I've probably completed thirty audiobooks, so it's a relatively new format for me. Mysteries and suspense novels have been the least effective, because it's hard for me to follow the clues since I'm more of a visual learner. I often think a flowchart and spreadsheet would be a helpful supplement to track these whodunits! However, there is a benefit to listening to atmospheric stories like The Shadows - the chilling music and the narrator's inflection and pauses are perfect to make you feel like you're immersed in a ghost story! The two narrators (male and female with British accents) did well to tell this dual perspective using two timeframes: Paul Adams (initially charged with a murder 25 years ago at age 15) and Detective Amanda Beck (working to solve a copycat murder in present day). Whether your preference is audio or print, pick up The Shadows for a hauntingly good story!

Cover art is perfect for creepy factor too!
